What is ultrasound?
Ultrasound imaging (sonography) uses high-frequency sound waves to look inside the body. Because these images are captured in real-time, they are also able to show movement of the body’s tissues as well as the flow within blood vessels. Unlike X-ray imaging, there is no ionizing radiation exposure associated with ultrasound.
In an ultrasound exam, a transducer is placed directly on the skin. A thin layer of gel is applied to the skin so that the ultrasound waves are transmitted from the transducer through the gel into the body. The ultrasound image is produced based on the reflection of the waves off of the body structures.
Why use ultrasound to evaluate joints and muscles?
There are several benefits to using ultrasound to evaluate joints and muscles:
- Soft tissue resolution – we can see ligaments, tendons, nerves and blood vessels that are not visible with x-ray
- Accessibility – it can be done in the office during your appointment
- Side-side – we can compare your affected side to your non-affected side
- Dynamic – we can view your anatomy while you perform maneuvers that cause your symptoms
- No radiation
- Low cost relative to MRI or CT scan
- Guide procedures – improves accuracy in injections and other treatments
The use of ultrasound during your evaluation allows Dr. Makinde to provide a more precise diagnosis and detailed follow-up plan leading to a more efficient return to activity or work. Patients are able to make more informed decisions regarding their course of treatment.
