- It is unclear what causes the nerve to swell, however foot and ankle injuries, decreased lower leg strength and flexibility, and ill-fitting shoes may all increase the risk.

- Heel injuries, tight leg muscles, flat feet, abnormally fitting shoes, and overuse can all cause plantar fasciitis.
